ICAR–Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (ICAR-CIRB), Hisar has initiated a collaborative project with the Nagaland Bio-Resource Mission (NBRM) titled “Nutraceutical Buffalo Milk: A Sustainable Dairy Solution for Nagaland” under the NEH programme. The project aims to promote buffalo-based dairying and development of value-added nutraceutical buffalo milk products to support sustainable livelihoods and improve nutritional security of farmers and consumers in Nagaland.
As part of the project implementation, the Government of Nagaland has procured ten elite buffaloes from ICAR-CIRB, Hisar. A total of 10 animals, including 3 buffaloes with calves and 7 pregnant buffaloes, were formally transferred to Nagaland on 19 January 2026.
Under the project, a buffalo husbandry and milk value addition demonstration unit is being established at Razhaphe Basa, Chumukedima, Nagaland. This unit will function as a nucleus centre for demonstrating scientific buffalo management practices and processing of nutraceutical buffalo milk-based products for the benefit of local farmers and rural entrepreneurs.
ICAR-CIRB Director, Dr. T. K. Bhattacharya, flagged off the consignment of buffaloes and formally handed them over to the NBRM authorities who visited Hisar to receive the animals. The event marks an important milestone in ICAR-CIRB’s efforts to extend elite buffalo germplasm and scientific dairy practices to the North Eastern Hill region through collaborative partnerships with state agencies.
