Institute Technology Management Unit (ITMU)

Promoting Cutting – edge Buffalo Technologies

Introduction to ITMU

The Institute Technology Management Unit (ITMU) was established in 2008 as part of the Intellectual Property Management and Transfer/Commercialization of Agricultural Technology Scheme, funded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). It aims to improve the management, protection, and commercialization of agricultural technologies developed by the institute. ITMU is a key unit within ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (ICAR-CIRB) for fostering innovation, managing intellectual property, and transferring technologies to industry. It is structured into three components under National Agricultural Innovation Fund (NAIF) : Component 1 (Innovation Fund), which deals with ITMU’s core activities, Component 2 (ABI Activities), and Component 3 (ARYA Activities). Through the establishment of the Institute Technology Management Committee (ITMC), ITMU serves as the central body coordinating the development and commercialization of technologies, filing patents, and maintaining the institute’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio. In 2024-25, ITMU continued to follow ICAR’s administrative guidelines and policies to ensure that all activities related to IP management and technology commercialization are compliant with the latest legal, regulatory, and institutional norms.

The unit’s activities not only cover research-driven technological innovations but also promote the utilization of these technologies through industry collaborations, strengthening the bridge between research, development, and commercialization.

Objectives of ITMU

The Institute Technology Management Unit (ITMU) is designed to achieve several key objectives that support the institute’s mission of innovation, technology transfer, and commercialization. These objectives include:

  1. Adopt and Implement IP Protection
  2. Technology Transfer and Commercialization
  3. Facilitate Collaboration and Partnerships
  4. Provide Consultancy and Training
  5. Strategic Planning and Innovation Management

Through these objectives, ITMU has become an integral part of the institute, playing a key role in facilitating the commercialization of Buffalo Husbandry technologies developed at ICAR-CIRB.
