NETWORK PROJECT ON BUFFALO IMPROVEMENT

2014-15

Salient Research Achievements

 

The Network Project on Buffalo Improvement {NWP(BI)} was initiated in 1993 with the aim to produce progeny tested bulls for improvement in buffalo population in the country.  Seven important buffalo breeds are covered through eighteen centres, which include associated herds / Main units of Murrah (8), Pandharpuri, Surti and Jaffarabadi; field units for Murrah (3) and conservation units for Swamp, Bhadawari and Nili-Ravi breeds together with improvement through selection. A bull certification laboratory for disease status testing is also established under the project at CIRB, Hisar.

 

Murrah

 

There are eight participating centres including non-funded ICAR institutes viz. CIRB Hisar, NDRI Karnal and IVRI Izatnagar; associated non-funded centres at KVASU Pookode and ICAR RC for ER Patna, besides three funded centres at state veterinary universities i.e. GADVASU Ludhiana, LUVAS Hisar and SPVNR Telangana State UVAFS  centre at Mamnoor. There is an improvement in WA, AFC, SP and CI at Murrah centres. 204522 Frozen semen doses of Murrah bulls were produced and 149752 semen doses were sold/supplied during 2014-15. Current stock of frozen semen from Murrah bulls is 423543 which include 73291 straws from progeny tested bulls.

Progeny Testing: As per technical program for Murrah breed, a set of upto 15 pedigreed bulls is selected in each set and it is used for AI in the associated herds (comprising a total of 960 breedable buffaloes) and field buffaloes (approximately 16000 AIs per annum) for test mating over 18 months duration. From 1st July 2015 onward semen of XV set is being used at the Murrah centres while semen of XIV set was used upto June 2014. It will continue till December 2015. So far, 188 superior bulls have been test mated in 14 sets and 15 bulls of XV set are under test mating.

First lactation records of the daughters born from the inseminations with semen of bulls from first 10 sets have been used to evaluate the bulls. In X Set, Bull no. 1693 from LUVAS, Hisar top ranked with sire index value of 2320.39 kg followed by bull no 2045 from GADVASU, Ludhiana having sire index of 2320.29 kg and used for elite mating. The percent genetic superiority of these bulls over their contemporary daughters was 1.23.

Production performance: Wet average for Murrah herds varied from 5.90 kg at LRS Mamnoor to 8.70 Kg at LUVAS during 2014-15. The weighted Wet average was the highest since inception of project at 7.95 Kg (n=408), depicting an improvement over previous year 7.73 Kg (n=404). Average standard lactation (305 days or less) milk yield (SLMY) varied from 1626 kg (n=11) at LRS Mamnoor to 2674±82 (n=46) at GADVASU. The weighted mean of average SLMY was 2338 kg (n=406). Average SLMY is above 2300 Kg since 2011-12, reflecting over 19 per cent improvement since 1993-94.

Reproductive performance: All the centres evidenced reduced AFC this year leading to weighted mean AFC of 41.37 months compared to 43.68 months in 2013-14. Weighted SP varies from 117±11 days (n=52) day at LUVAS to 168±8 days (n=88) at CIRB with the weighted mean of 143 days (n=340). Weighted AFC reduced by 12 days over the previous year. The weighted calving interval was 457 days (n=299), as compared to 466 days (n=303) during the previous year.

Field Units: The field progeny testing programme was initiated with the aim to produce more number of daughters per bull for evaluating sires with more accuracy. At GADVASU centre 8316 AIs were done and 3810 pregnancies were confirmed, 2958 calvings were recorded out of which 1447 were female. 156 daughters calved and 90 daughters’ test day milk yield was recorded. At CIRB centre, 4129 AIs performed, 1993 were pregnant, 1093 calvings took place out of which 528 calves were female, 93 daughters calved and 52 daughters’ test day milk yield records were completed while recording in 66 daughters is in progress. At NDRI centre 3941 AIs performed, 2033 pregnancies confirmed with the CR of 51.58 percent, 1860 calvings recorded with the birth of 905 females calves, 281 daughters calved and 183 daughters’ test day milk yield recorded. Daughters’ records are now being used for bull evaluation in the XI set. The number of records from field is now exceeding the number of records available from associated herds for bull evaluation.

 

Other breeds

 

Nili-Ravi, Bhadawari and swamp breed centres are functioning as conservation and improvement units and Jaffarabadi, Pandharpuri and Surti breed centre are concentrating on field  progeny testing along with maintaining the herd for bull production and testing. A breedable herd of 501 (Nili-Ravi-178, Jaffarabadi-151, Pandharpuri-34, Swamp-41, Surti-44 and Bhadawari-53) is being maintained at the above six breeds. A total of 1,05,978 semen doses of other breeds viz. Jaffarabadi, Surti, Pandharpuri Bhadawari, Nili Ravi and Swamp, were produced and 60,282 semen doses were sold/supplied during the report period. Balance stock of frozen semen of buffalo bulls, other than Murrah breed, is 265120 doses.

 

Nili Ravi

 

Standard (305 days or less) lactation milk yield was highest since inception at 2284 kg which is 113 kg more than the previous year. Lactation length also improved to 303 days from 285 days in 2013-14. Annual wet average 8.48 kg and herd average of 5.98 kg were also the highest so far.  Nabha centre sold 23,325 frozen semen doses of Nili-Ravi to developmental agencies and farmers, which indicates increasing interest in the breed amongst farmers.

 

Jaffarabadi

 

Set II of bulls was used for AI at the farm and III set was introduced. The conception rate was 50.44 percent - improved from 30.0% during the previous year. 46,153 doses of frozen semen from 12 bulls are available at the centre. During the year 15,789 doses of semen were produced and 7,142 doses were used in AI in farm and field. SLMY improved in 2014-15 i.e. 2095.7 kg (n=37) from 1629.2 kg (n=33) in the year 2013-14. There was improvement in all reproductive traits viz. AFC 46.60 m (n=5), Service period 140.43 days (n=30), dry period 176.53 days (n=30) and calving interval 450.43 days (n=30). Only 40 percent animals remained in milk during most of the period since inception of this centre in 2001, with only three exceptions when it was over 50 per cent.  The wet average and herd average were 7.38 kg and 3.01 kg, respectively, showing improvement over recent previous years. Progenies of test matings with Jaffarabadi semen are standing in the field but recording of progeny performance is still not initiated.

 

Pandharpuri

 

Total breedable buffaloes at the centre were 34,  to be increased to 50 at the centre for bull production. During the period 37,860 semen doses were produced and 18,380 doses from V set of bulls were used in the field. The 305 day or less day milk yield was 1421.34 kg (n=12) decreased over previous year with low WA and HA of 4.57 and 2.12 kg due to only 33% animals in milk. The reproductive parameters viz. AFC, Service period, Dry period and Calving interval were 44.32 months (n=2), 109 days (n=10), 108 days (n=10) and 429 days (n=10) respectively. 4329 AI’s performed in Kolhapur, Solapur and Belgaum districts from V set bulls. A total of 2104 conceptions reported with conception rate of 48.60 % and 524 female progenies born. 425 daughters of 8 bulls of set I, 141 daughters of 8 bulls of set II and 32 daughters of 4 bulls (out of six bulls in the set) of  set III completely recorded. Progenies in Pandharpuri are standing in the field and recording of progeny performance is low.

 

Surti

 

Forty breedable buffaloes are at the farm. During the report period 10,370 semen doses were produced from VI & VII set of bulls and semen from these sets bulls was used in field. Average 305 or less days lactation yield was 1444±61 kg, comparable to previous year. WA and HA showed small increase over previous year due to 69% animals being in milk. Reproductive parameters showed decline over previous year. Age at first calving, Service Period, Dry Period and calving Interval were 47.01±2.49 months, 162.28±18.74 days, 177.2±35.07 days and 445.9±33.71 days, respectively. Semen from 7 bulls was used for 1534 AI’s and 455 buffalo conceived and 409 calving took place. 293 progenies are available in the field for recording. Recording on 22 daughters completed.

 

Bhadawari

 

It is a conservation unit having 53 breeding buffaloes. Semen of two bulls was used for AI purpose at the farm. 7,870 doses of semen were produced from 3 bulls and 7,138 doses were used/ supplied for AI in the field. Average lactation yield (1638.8 Kg), SLMY (1478.3 kg), lactation length (367 days) for n=21, show improvement.  Average service period was 182.3 days and AFC was 54 months. These two values are higher than the target fixed. 9 male calves and 2800 frozen semen doses were disseminated to farmers. A total of 2236 AIs in 2013-14 and 3177 AI’s in 14-15 were performed in Etawh, Agra, Jalaun, Jhansi, Auriya, Lalitpur & Banda districts. 635 calvings took place in the field.

 

Swamp

The swamp breed centre is conserving the swamp buffaloes putting effort to maintain only Swamp germplasm at the centre. The production performance of these animals is poor as the breed is for draught purpose. This centre is for conservation of this germplasm of NE region.

 

Bull certification laboratory

It is testing and screening for various diseases i.e. Tuberculosis, Johnin Disease, Brucellosis, IBRT, Leptospirosis, Campylobacteriosis and Trichomoniasis, so that disease free frozen semen doses are provided for bull testing and dissemination.

 

Apart from above centres the following two centres viz. ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna and KVASU, Pookode are also functioning as a non-funded centre and these centres may be included in the 13th plan if the performance of these centres improves during the period.

ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region: Test mating was carried out in 20 breedable buffaloes. Herd strength at the centre was 37 animals. 6 calving were reported during the year and calf mortality (0-3 months) was 14.29 percent (1/7). Twenty seven AI’s were carried out resulting in ten conceptions with conception rate of 37.04 percent. Semen doses of 15th set bulls are now being used at the centre. Av. Lactation yield, Av. Lactation length and 305 or less day milk yield were 2021.48 (n=14), 421.21 (n=14) and 1696.71 (n=14) respectively during the year. The service period, dry period and calving interval were 146.3±8.98 days (n=7), 124.9±5.91 days (n=7) and 569.4±14.54 days (n=7) respectively. The wet and herd averages at the centre were very low at 3.98 kg and 1.71 kg respectively. Only 42.98 % buffaloes were in milk. The centre should increase its herd strength to 50 breedable buffaloes within next two years.

KVASU Pookode: The herd strength at LRS Thiruvazhamkunnu under KVASU, Pookode was 59 heads, consisting 24 breedable buffaloes and  23.88 percent buffaloes were in milk. Wet and Herd averages reduced to 3.36 and 1.87 Kg in 2014-15 from 5.57 and 3.44 Kg respectively in 2013-14. Only three calving were reported in 2014-15.  The performance of the centre is poor and a lot to be desired before considering it to include in the project.
