ICAR-CIRB become India’s second center to produce a cloned buffalo

Hisar: In a unique achievement, Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Director, ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (CIRB) informed that institute scientists produced cloned calf ‘HISAR  GOURAV’ on December 11, 2015 at 11:30 AM, birth weight of 40.4 kg born through normal delivery.

This cloned buffalo calf is distinct from the earlier clones produced in India, as this  is produced from cells of ventral side of tail of superior buffalo bull, this part is least exposed to sunlight and may have less mutation rate, and can  be good choice for isolation of donor cells to produce healthy clones. The newborn cloned calf is maintaining good health and showing normal activities. Dr Singh emphasized that the use of adult somatic cells of proven males or quality females for cloning can bring revolution by multiplying the superior buffalo germplasm in country. With this achievement CIRB becomes world’s third and India’s second institute to produce cloned buffalo. This achievement has been made under the project entitled, Cloning for conservation and multiplication of superior buffalo germplasm

 Meeting onStrengthening Extension Services” on convergence mode for dairy development
 A meeting on Strengthening Extension Services on convergence mode for dairy development was organized by ICAR-CIRB  under the chairmanship of Director, Dr. I J Singh on 7th January, 2017 to delineate the roles and expectations of  various agency working for dairy development on  convergence mode . On this occasion,  Dr. V V Sadamate, former advisor Planning Commission was the chief guest and presented his key note address. Stakeholders of dairy development representing research institutions like Director ATARI (Zone-I), Dr. Rajbir Singh, Director Extension LUVAS, Dr. Sudhiranjan Garg, Additional Director training, Dr. Nishi Sethi, Head Extension CCS HAU, Dr. Pradeep Sehrawat were present on the occasion.

ASEAN training on Reproductive Biotechnology at ICAR-CIRB, HISAR

ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes, Hisar organised a 10-day training programme (Jan31 – Feb9, 2017) on ‘Buffalo production using reproductive biotechnology’ for delegates from ASEAN countries.  The program was sponsored by the ASEAN-India Joint Cooperation Fund. The training was attended by sixteen participants from 8 ASEAN member countries – two each from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. During this training the participants were acquainted with the modern biotechnology tools for use in livestock production systems especially buffaloes. Various topics and practicals were covered by experts from CIRB and leading outside institutes.

 ICAR-CIRB Scientists Awarded during ISSRE-2017 at ICMR-Delhi

Dr. Naresh SelokarScientist received Prof. SS Guraya Young Scientist award  by the Indian Society for study of reproduction and fertility (ISSRF). Award was conferred for his outstanding contributions in the field of somatic cloning and assisted reproduction techniques in buffalo. Besides Dr. Dharmendra Kumar, Scientist and his team received 'Best Poster Presentation award' on 'PiggyBac mediated reprogramming of buffalo fetal fibroblasts to generate induced pluripotent stem cells'. Both the awards were conferred during the International Conference on reproductive health with emphasis on Strategies for Infertility, Assisted Reproduction and Family Planning, ICMR, New Delhi  held from January 23 - 25, 2017
